Policy Orientations: Green

Storytelling

Stories of hope – these would be the most beneficial approach related to green storytelling by art, culture and heritage. This is one of the main recommendations for storytellers from my recent Creative FLIP publication in the series of policy orientations in view of major transformation areas in the European Union. People have difficulties to cope with (permanent) change. The narratives of crisis can alert, but might cause disorientation and fear. However, to better cope with change we require positive perspectives. Arts have the faculty to imagine new futures, creative industries are able to transform these perspectives to sustainable products and cultural services, heritage professional can demonstrate how previous generations have tackled transformation – for a future of populations in a healthy environment, sufficient and sustainable (food) production, access to and protection from water, etc. Our policy recommendations provide orientation for decisionmakers how to further green storytelling ecosystems and to tackle challenging policy environments in view of sustainable transformation. Local, regional, national, EU and international action is needed! A heartful thank to Isabelle De Voldere for being a critical friend in the course of the elaboration of the paper, Charlotte Jerie for the operational support and all the participants at the focus group for their insights and time!
